Kindly translated into Chinese by Caroline Hsu. Thank you!

Ten of us went bicycling in Shanghai yesterday, from Billion’s shop by Xintiandi to Lujiazui, and back to his shop. I had a great time and I hope everyone who showed up did as well. Big thanks to the staff of Shanghai Bicycle Rental: Billion, Chris, Edward, and Lao Wu!

Our tour was followed by a massage near the shop, dinner at that Singaporean restaurant on Tongren Lu, and then parties at various bars (Red Beat, Night Shift, The Shelter, C’s Pub).

This bicycling event and some of the other ones I’ve blogged about were organized by people in Weekend Ideas. I’ll write a bit about the group sometime.

Some photos in this post were shot by Jim and Billion. Thanks guys!

Day 213: No work today

Friday, November 14th, 2008

I’m glad I didn’t have to work today (company had a scheduled power outage) because the weather was absolutely perfect! Blue skies, cool breeze, about 70 degrees F – perfect for biking, and that’s what I did.

But I busted the rear tire before I even got anywhere. Fortunately there was a bicycle repair shop just a block away. The repair cost me only 1.5 RMB, I shit you not. Less than a US quarter.

Finally some real nightclub photos! Special effects lighting, fog machines, dancers, mayhem! Everyone was speaking English, I almost forgot I was in Shanghai. Anyway, enough words. Pics from last Saturday night at Candy Club:

Day 201: Halloween in Shanghai

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

Ahh, my first Halloween in China, and I can’t remember half of it.

It started at Bonnie’s friend’s company’s party, where we got free food and drinks, Josephine won a quarter-bottle of wine, and Bonnie lost to a Ninja Turtle.

Then our group went to Night Shift and met with Joe and DJ Malfan (aka Bunk).

Day 196: I got a bike

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

After spending half a year in China, I finally got a bicycle. I got an entry level mountain bike from Shanghai Bicycle Rental near Xintiandi. The shop, which just opened last month, has an English-speaking staff and the owner, Billion (yes his name is Billion), is the most laid-back guy you’ll ever meet. Seriously, go take a look. He’s fun to watch.

Day 195: Cold Fairyland awesome

Monday, October 27th, 2008

A couple hot chicks and I watched Shanghainese band Cold Fairyland (冷酷仙境) perform last Friday night. Great show! Later we even got autographs when the band coincidentally showed up at the same bar we were at and sat at the table next to ours. They were really nice.

好show!

How to read Chinese when you obviously can’t

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

So what do you do when you’re an ABC who can understand some spoken Chinese but can’t read Chinese and there’s a Chinese webpage you have to read and the few bilingual friends you have are tired of translating for you and you’ve run out of money to pay them to do it?

Go to the webpage in question and copy the text that you need to read.

Sex Museum in Shanghai

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Kindly translated into Chinese by Belle. Thank you!

Shanghai’s Sex Museum is a little hard to find. I don’t have an address for it, but it’s at the end of the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel on the Pudong side. I don’t have an address for the tunnel either, but it’s near the Oriental Pearl Tower. I don’t have an address for the tower either, but it’s that giant needle with pink balls on it. You can’t miss it.

I know you don’t want to ask around for directions to the Sex Museum. That’s okay, because you get the museum ticket (20 RMB) at the same booth as the tunnel ticket. So just ask for directions to the tunnel, and you’ll find the museum.
