Social harmony

Just saw this video while browsing Sinosplice John’s blog. Haha… Like John says, it’s “a parallel harmonious universe.” People are not so friendly in China. Maybe in America (sometimes), but definitely not China.

China is a dog eat dog world where you have to keep you eyes peeled at all times for pickpockets, con artists, line cutters and bad drivers. You cannot depend on the help of strangers. Sure there are isolated incidents of exceptional kindness, but for the most part, you fend for yourself. That’s why it’s so exciting here!

The government has been trying to change things for the better (or at least China’s image) by promoting social harmony, but oftentimes they take it too far. For people in China, the term “harmony” (héxié, 和谐) has become a verb to mean things like “covered up” or “unjustly resolved.” Anything that disrupts social harmony can be “harmonized.”

Examples:

  • The reporter who uncovered this scandal has been harmonized.
  • This online discussion about abusive chénggŭan has been harmonized.
  • People who talk to foreign media about Beijing’s pollution have been harmonized.
  • Any website that hosts Edison Chen’s naughty photos will be harmonized.
  • Daniel Kwan might get harmonized for talking about getting harmonized.

Like I said, it’s exciting here!

Yahoo to Microsoft: NO!

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

From The Wall Street Journal’s article:

Yahoo Inc.’s board plans to reject Microsoft Corp.’s unsolicited $44.6 billion offer to acquire the Web giant, a person familiar with the situation says.

Yay for Flickr! At least for now.

Gossip, geek, China blogs

Friday, February 8th, 2008

I’m subscribed to way too many blogs (69 currently, not intentionally). Funny thing about that is I absolutely hate reading. Always have. Every time I pick up a book, my eyes get tired and I want to sleep.

But I have no problem scanning through blogs because I can just read the stuff I like and skip the garbage posts. Everyday Google Reader feeds me 100+ new blog items from my subscriptions, and they’ve been teaching me a few things.

First, celebrities are funny as hell. The lives of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton really shouldn’t matter to me, but they’re just so entertaining! And Edison Chen is my new idol. Here are two very similar and hilarious celebrity gossip blogs: The Blemish and The Superficial.

Second, I’ve learned that, despite my attempts to change, I’m still a geek at heart. And not the good kind that knows C++ and starts up companies in their parents’ garage. I’m the kind that sits on his ass all day playing World of WarCraft and watching anime. (For the record I stopped playing WoW a long time ago, and I just started watching anime very recently!) The best geek blog I know of: Topless Robot.

Third, China is fascinating, and not in the ancient civilization way that pops into Westerners’ minds. Hot topics in China right now include a Photoshopped tiger that government officials at some town insist is real, and, of course, Edison Chen’s celebrity sex scandal. And if you still think China is behind the times, look up My Hero and Super Girl, American Idolesque crap that prove that China has indeed caught up in the degradation of society. Check out Danwei.org and Shanghaiist.com.

That’s enough for now.

Chinese New Year in Shanghai

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Shanghaiist.com recently did a photo feature about Chinese New Year in Shanghai. A couple of my photos are in there, one of them shot with my iPhone, and the other with my Coolpix. My two SLRs have been hibernating.

Another tidbit about how Chinese people in China are hardcore about Chinese New Year: they celebrate it for 10 15 frikkin’ days! And they don’t work during those 10 days. And every single night (and day) during those 10 15 days, people shoot up fireworks. [Fixed some incorrect info. Let me know if still wrong.]

I don’t know about anyone else here but I haven’t been getting much sleep. As soon as I fall asleep there’d be a loud wheeeeeeeeew BANG! PONG! BAM BAM BAM! Damn pyromaniacs! Fortunately for me I’ve never been in a war zone, but I imagine it sounds pretty much like Chinese New Year in China.

Year of the Edison Sex Scandal

Friday, February 8th, 2008

This is the most exciting Chinese New Year ever! The Edison sex scandal photos are being made available one batch at a time by someone going by the alias “Kira”. (If the name Kira means nothing to you, go watch Death Note!) The files get distributed by e-mail and file sharing websites to avoid problems with the law.

This Kira supposedly has about 1300 photos and some videos. So far around 200 to 300 photos have been released and I’ve seen one crappy teaser video. On Chinese online forums (which they like to call “bbs”), people are leaving their e-mail addresses to receive the latest batch.

Blogger Alvin Lim has been doing a good job keeping English speakers up to date. Shanghaiist.com has in-depth info on the whole thing. This scandal even made it to Wikipedia. Celebrity gossip blog The Blemish has links to the goodies.

And as for Chinese websites, the news is all over the place. The actual files are a little hard to find but people who have the files have been sharing them through QQ (the instant messenger software everybody in China uses).

Flickr users vs. Microsoft regime

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

The above photoillustration is by another Flickr user who wants Microsoft to stay away from Flickr. Saw it in the Flickr Group MICROSOFT: KEEP YOUR EVlL GRUBBY HANDS OFF OF OUR FLICKR, whose mission is to “STOP MICROSOFT FROM BUYING YAHOO! AND DESTROYING THE FLICKR WE KNOW AND LOVE OR WE WILL DIE TRYING.” I wouldn’t die trying, but I joined the group anyway.

Some more from the group’s pool:

BOOM! Happy Chinese New Year!

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

Remember I said people here in China are hardcore about Chinese New Year?

Dude, they shoot up fireworks right next to buildings, right in between buildings, right from the balcony, wherever there’s empty space overhead. We’ve all seen fireworks but it’s something else at close range. Inside the building you can hear debris hitting the windows and see burn marks. And outside, watch out for tipped over packs of fireworks! Fire hazard? Maybe, but who cares? It’s Chinese New Year! Time to blow things up!

CJ7 is stupid

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

All movie theaters in Shanghai are half price on Tuesdays, so I went and watched Stephen Chow’s latest movie, CJ7 (长江7号). Oh man. Stephen Chow. What happened?! Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle were pretty funny but this movie sucks! Or maybe it was made for a younger audience, like ages 1-3.

Sure the audience laughed, but they were mostly laughing because the little CGI alien was being cute. I don’t know man. I really don’t find an animated snot making different facial expressions to be that funny.

Save your money and skip this movie. I’m not saying to download it and watch it on the computer, like everyone else in China. I’m saying just don’t even waste your time.

Edison Chen: Stop sharing my wee wee!

If you haven’t already heard, some private photos of Hong Kong actor Edison Chen (aka EDC, 陈冠希) having woohoo with some HK actresses have been leaked onto the net. In the above video, Edison is telling people to stop looking.

And he’s right. You shouldn’t be looking at them. If you do, you’re spreading this “malicious crime” when you should be helping “the innocent rebuild their lives.” Like Edison says, “The priority now is for all of us to pitch in and help those in need.”

I’m a virtuous man so I won’t comment on his ding dong or Cecilia Cheng’s vajayjay. And I won’t tell you where to Google the pics.

Microsoft to Yahoo: Resistance is futile!

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

If Microsoft takes over Yahoo, and Flickr becomes part of the Borg, I’m leaving Flickr. (Not that anyone would care.) I don’t want Microsoft handling an archive of my photos. Nowadays I only use a Microsoft product to occasionally chat with fobs on MSN.
