Looks like this ATM’s using Windows. That would explain why there are always so many ATMs out of service in Shanghai.

Wow… looks like the ATM might even be running DOS, although we hope not.
The standard OS for ATMs used to be IBM OS/2, which was considered fairly reliable. But since IBM couldn’t keep the product alive, the major ATM manufacturers went to Windows… because they say that’s what their customers (banks) wanted. Ask the banks, and they say, that’s the only choice they were given. Usually what they use is something like Windows XP Embedded.
Unrelated to this, the engine control units (ECUs) of Formula One racers was supposed to be supplied starting this year by Microsoft. I found no confirmation of that. But if you buy a new Ford, you will likely get Sync from Microsoft.
