Day 244: Christmas party photos

Shanghai Stuff Christmas Party 2008

(Chinese translation provided by Susie, Lulu, and Lucid Dreamer. Thank you!)

Thanks to Karl for arranging and masterminding last Saturday’s Shanghai Stuff Christmas Party at Candy Club. Again it went great and we raised 2980 RMB to donate to the Shanghai Charity Foundation.

Once again a lot of these photos were not shot by me, because I let others run around with my camera. Mostly they were shot by me, Khalid, Lulu, Bonnie, and Joe. And incidentally most of the pics are of ourselves and those around us.

We should have taken some pics of our people running the front booth though, and Roger as Santa. Oh well, next time. Maybe we’ll do a Valentine’s Day party and have Roger dress up as Cupid!

Anyway, here are the pics. Enjoy!

Day 243: Great party last night!

Wow what a pic. First of all, what the hell? Second, according to the timestamp the booze kicked in around 2:53 AM. And finally, I regret letting my coworkers know I have a blog.

Great Christmas party last night! Big thanks to everyone who came – you all helped raise 2980 RMB (US$435) for charity!

Several people used my camera and there are too many photos for me to sort through tonight. Hopefully I can get them up tomorrow night.

Christmas party tonight!

Day 236: Chenghuangmiao for gifts

(Post kindly translated into Chinese by Susie. Thank you!)

People shopping at Chenghuangmiao.

We’ll be doing Secret Santa at the Christmas party, so yesterday a couple of us went and got gifts for our persons at Chénghuángmiào. The place is better known to tourists as Yuyuan Garden, which is actually right next to Chenghuangmiao.

Since it’s a tourist spot, there’s lots of weird stuff you wouldn’t normally find in shopping malls. It also means inflated prices, so best to bring along a local who can haggle.

Day 233: Weekend Ideas in Shanghai

(Post kindly translated into Chinese by Lucid Dreamer. Thank you!)

Weekend Ideas is a group I created in Shanghai’s English-language social networking website Shanghai Stuff back in August. Since its formation, it has consistently been among the most active groups in the website and is the only one to regularly hold get-togethers for its members. The group was created for several reasons:

First, there were several groups that promote nightlife events, but none that actively organizes meets for people to party together. In Weekend Ideas, members post the parties they’re going to and invite others to join. And because Weekend Ideas is free of commercial announcements, members are only notified of casual gatherings organized solely for the purpose of meeting others and having fun.

Second, nightlife can’t possibly be the only fun part of Shanghai, but probably a lot of people don’t know what to do during the day on weekends. However, if even just a few members can each contribute a different activity idea every once in a while, collectively that’s a lot more than what most of us can think of individually. We explore all that this city has to offer together.

The final reason was personal, and my main motivation for making Weekend Ideas. The precursors to this group were the gathering at Club MAO to watch the Olympics Opening Ceremony, and Jady’s party at C’s Pub. Both were informal events announced on Shanghai Stuff and where I met many people for the first time. Creating Weekend Ideas gave us all a convenient way to stay in touch as well as meet new people.

In the three months that Weekend Ideas has been around, we’ve gone out to take photos, had mildly entertaining house parties, had a bicycling trip, dinner, and massage together, gone back to C’s for the lamb skewers, and partied at various other bars and clubs. I feel like I’m dead during the week and brought back to life every weekend. Good times.

As of this writing, Weekend Ideas has reached more than 200 members.
