I’m doing location portraiture again! The last one I did was nearly a year ago, and it was of three ugly guys from San Francisco. Good to shoot at estrogen again.
First up is Anjo, a university student who unfortunately had to live by Qibao, way out in Minhang District. I understand the pain she went through.
D.Kwan: Where are you from and when did you move to Shanghai?
Anjo: I am from Wenzhou, Zhejiang province. I’ve been in Shanghai since September 2005. No special reason, just because my school is Shanghai Jiao Tong University (the top one in Shanghai!) but I’m going to graduate soon. I choose to work in Shanghai because I found a job here and I want to try it. Not sure for how long though.
DK: Do you miss home?
A: Definitely yes. I used to get pretty homesick but now I’m getting better. I like to hangout with my friends to have fun.
DK: How is Shanghai different from Wenzhou?
A: Compared to Wenzhou, Shanghai is much bigger as it’s a metropolis with a higher population. It’s good for shopping, parties, travel, etc. Shanghai has lots of clubs and bars, but in Wenzhou the clubs are usually much bigger and have fabulous decorations. There’s no “open bar” like in Shanghai.
DK: You’ve lived way out west (Qibao) and way out east (Pudong) in Shanghai. Which do you prefer?
A: I prefer Pudong for sure. It’s a very good area to live since it’s pretty quiet and new, and very convenient as well. Like where I live, very near the Thumb Plaza. You can get everything there. Not so many people go to bars there though. People usually like to go to Puxi, including myself. Qibao is very historical but not good for living, especially for youngsters. I don’t really like it. It’s quite dirty there, but it’s good for visiting.
DK: You go to bed very late. What do you do all night?
A: It depends. If I stay at home, I’m probably surfing the internet. Party sometimes, since most of the time I can’t stand being alone.
DK: As a self-proclaimed party animal, which clubs would you recommend to someone who’s visiting for just a couple days?
A: I wrote party animal on my profile just for fun actually. I don’t think I really am. But I like parties, and I like trance and house music, hip-hop sometimes. I think Muse is a good club to recommend, both Muse 1 and Muse 2. But after midnight and you still wanna go somewhere, it might be Windows or Dragon.
DK: What do you look for in a guy?
A: Good personality, honesty, respect, easy-going, romantic, mature, social and intelligent and educated, etc. Someone who can make me happy and make me feel special, and can discover another side of me that maybe myself even don’t know. We should have some things in common. About appearance, he shouldn’t look bad and must be taller than me.
DK: What do you think about Mr. Daniel Kwan?
A: When I just saw Mr. Daniel Kwan’s pictures on his profile, I thought he was a cool guy and I still do. He takes nice photos.
DK: So how many girls have you kissed so far?
A: NONE!
Shanghai Stuff happened to start its Member Spotlight feature around the same time, so I offered to team up and help out. You can see the SS version here.
